How to Convert TV to High Definition
By Billy Kirk
Overview
Converting a television to high definition can be a difficult procedure for those not acclimated. While many may assume that only a new high definition television is required, in reality there are a number of further steps to take when making the conversion. Your satellite or cable company must be called, a new television channel package ordered (and paid for, extra), and a new HD-compatible cable or satellite box must be installed. With these components in place however, HD programming will be at your fingertips.
Step 1
Purchase a high-definition television. You will need a TV that is able to display and utilize a high-definition signal. These TVs are clearly marked and marketed by the stores and online retailers that sell them.
Step 2
Contact your cable or satellite company. You will need to notify them that you intend on moving over to a high-definition setup. You will have to work with them over the phone or in person at an office in order to make this move to high definition a reality.
Step 3
Pay your cable or satellite company to upgrade your plan to an HD plan. High- definition channels are different than standard definition channels. You will need to pay a premium to receive high-definition channels. Without paying for the high- definition upgrade, your high definition television will be of little use for HD purposes, outside of using it to possibly power high-definition video games and BluRay movies. Unfortunately, paying for your new TV is not the only expense associated with HD programming.
Step 4
Wait for the cable or satellite company to deliver your new cable or satellite box. Even after you order an HD channel package, you will need a new HD-capable box in order to correctly receive these high-definition channels on your HD television. Fortunately, most of these HD-boxes come with a built in DVR that will allow you to record and save high definition and standard definition television programming at your convenience.
Step 5
Use the provided HD cables to hook up your new HD-capable box to your television. These cables will be color coded with corresponding sockets on the back of your high- definition television and high-definition cable or satellite box. Make these connections and hook up the HD cable/satellite box into a power outlet, although your cable or satellite company should provide this installation for you at no additional cost.
Step 6
Power on your high-definition television and high-definition cable or satellite box. Peruse your new high-definition channels and enjoy your upgrade from standard definition to high-definition television programming.
